For the Love of a Friend

"HEARTS FOR JAYLA" continues to garner lots of support but can always use more. Since her eye inquiry in 2009, Jayla has endured numerous surgury with the most recent one, April 13th. She is a phenomenal child with the spirit of a winner no matter what. You got to love her!!

There are a lot of people in her corner as demonstated by this most recent article. Her friend, Brett Hoffman (11 years old), is making a difference with his jewelry design for Jayla (10 years old). My marathon run could only have happened with the energy obtained from the charities I represented.

Marathon Update - First 10K EVER!!!

Yes, I ran my first 10k, ever. It was Labor Day when most folks relax and enjoy a cook out or two. But, not me, I was out there running through the neighborhood of Morrisville, Pennsylvania. I figured if I intend to do a Marathon, 26 miles, I should clearly start with some shorter races. So, the 10k (6.2 miles, my tag number for the run was 62, coincidence???), was my starting point. In my training schedule, I had run 6 miles a couple of times, so I knew I could do it.

BUT, running on your own and running an event is so different. The Pros: Folks cheering for you; Water breaks.....The Cons: The fast pace of all the runners. So what I did was just slow down to my own comfortable pace which meant I was soon all alone, just me, myself and I.

BUT the cheering carried me through to the end and I crossed the finished line completing my first 10k. A BAGEL and WATER never tasted soooo goood!!!

I run because Jonathan can't!!
I run because Jayla needs her full vision!!

Donate what you can!!!

Charitable Remainder Trust

With anything there are pitfalls. The Charitable Remainder Trust is a great way to give appreciated property to your favorite charity while getting tax deductions for yourself. We often refer to this type of trust as the gift that gives back.

However, you must understand how this type of trust works and make sure it is right for you. It is an irrevocable trust which therefore can not be changed or terminated once it is set up. Of course there are ways available to make changes or terminate BUT at a cost of time and money. If the person setting it up and the charity receiving the benefit should agree to a proposed change or termination then court approval should be sought. Also, the Attorney General's office should be notified since the Attorney General's office handles charitable organizations.

Power of the Purse

I attended an anual grantmaking dinner hosted by the Bucks County Women's Fund. It was entitled Power of the Purse to symbolize the strength and potential of women's philanthropy. The program also demonstrated to all in attendance that charitable estate planning is just as important to engage in while you are living. We see the fruits of our charitable support. Those who benefit are also given an opportunity to give their thanks. Everyone receives encouragement to do even more to make a difference in the lives of those in need.

There are many people who want to know the best way to support charitable causes. You can make charitable deductions to a qualified charity (501c3, church, etc) during your lifetime; you can give a specific amount in your will to a non-profit organization; and, you can set up all types of trust to meet your specific need. Let us help. Contact us at http://www.ythlaw.com/ or leave your comments here.

Madam C.J.Walker - Entrepreneur Legacy

We continue with the estate planning lessons of the rich and/or famous, the contemporary and/or historical figures. What did they do right or wrong in their planning? Hindsight of course is 20/20 so let it work for our estate planning.

How many of us know Madam C.J. Walker? She was born in 1867 and became an American businesswoman, hair care entrepreneur, tycoon and philanthropist who made a way out of no way to accomplish what many only dreamed about during her time. She made a fortune by developing and selling beauty and hair products. She founded the Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company to sell hair care products and cosmetics. She used her company to build wealth and to promote economic opportunities for others. She provided jobs to many during her lifetime and gave to charitable institutions. Upon her death in 1919, she left two-thirds of her estate to many educational institutions and charities all of which still exist today because of this type of philanthropy.

Because Madam C.J. Walker did plan for the transfer of her wealth upon her death, her legacy lives on today in her great-great-granddaugher's ability to share her ancestor's story through her books, writings and speakes. Leave your comments here or contact us at
