Many people do provide burial instructions in their Will. It is also important to communicate funeral instructions to family members to make sure your wishes are followed. If the instructions only appear in the Will and the Will is not immediately assessible, no one will know your preference if you did not communicate the instructions to anyone. Do not let this mistake happen to you.

The following burial instructions can be provided in the Will: Burial plot number; Cremation, if desired; location of services; how funeral expenses are to be covered; program; guest preference; and, the list goes on.

A Final Gift

A friend's mother passed and I attended the memorial service in celebration of her mother's life. It was very intriguing for me. Her mother donated her body to science. Though I have noted that request in documents for many individuals, this was the first time that I attended a service where one had donated their body to science. My friend's mother had follow in the footsteps of her own mother who gave her body to science at a time when very few people considered that option.

As I have said in several blogs that our assets include everything, even our bodies. We can recall the controversy surrounding Michael Jackson's body and burial. What about Anna Nicole Smith? There was major controversy over the location of the burial of her body.

Michael Jackson - Buried?

I recently read that Michael Jackson's body will be buried in an unmarked grave. Well, what would he have wanted? I guess we will never know since there was no docummentation, to our knowledge, regarding his wishes.

Over the years, I have asked my clients of their burial intentions. The thought had not occurred to them but when asked to make their wishes known, they had very definite desires. Some have documented their interest to be cremated, with ashes maintained in an urn, tossed into the ocean, scattered over golf courses, and the list goes on. Others would like their bodies donated for scientific research. While others want very elaborate funerals with specific music and religious preferences which may be the same as their family or differ from their family.

No one can read your mind so think ahead and write done your wishes now.
